llms.txt and llms-full.txt
What the two text files for AIs contain, how to give them to an assistant and how to read each page as Markdown.
llms.txt and llms-full.txt are two text files that give the documentation to an AI. They hold no data from your account and can be read without a key. For the AI to read your students, connect the MCP server.
The MCP suits an assistant you chat with. For a script or a tool, such as a coding agent in your terminal, give it the CLI instead: fitdistance docs prints its own guide.
The two files
https://fitdistance.io/documentation/api/llms.txtis the index. It gives the base address of the API and how to authenticate, then a link and a sentence for each guide page, each family of routes and each file for machines: the OpenAPI contract,llms-full.txt,GET /operationsand the MCP server.https://fitdistance.io/documentation/api/llms-full.txtholds everything in a single file. A header recalls the base address, the authentication and the billing. Then come all the guide pages, followed by the full reference of every route, with its parameters, its examples and its errors.
Both are in English, whatever the language of the site. Their links are complete addresses.
Take llms.txt when your AI can open a link: it follows the ones it needs on its own. Take llms-full.txt when it cannot, or to give it everything at once. It is long and needs a large context window.
A page as Markdown
Add .md to the address of a page, guide or reference, to read it as Markdown:
https://fitdistance.io/en/documentation/api/getting-started/first-call.md
https://fitdistance.io/en/documentation/api/reference/students.mdThe same text is also at https://fitdistance.io/en/documentation/api/md/getting-started/first-call, with /md after /documentation/api. For a guide page, it starts with the title, the description and the address of the page, and its internal links are complete addresses.
The Markdown of a guide page keeps the language of its address: with /en before /documentation it is in English, and without a prefix it is in French. The Markdown of the reference is in English either way.
The "Copy page" menu
Every guide page has a Copy page menu that does all this for you: Copy as Markdown, View as Markdown, Open in Claude, Open in ChatGPT and Copy the llms.txt link. The two "Open" buttons launch the assistant with a message that asks it to read the page and holds its address, not its text. The walk-through is in Give the docs to your AI.
Give them to an AI
Paste the address into the conversation, with your request:
Read https://fitdistance.io/documentation/api/llms.txt, then help me write a script that lists my students. An agent that can run commands can also read the file itself:
curl -s https://fitdistance.io/documentation/api/llms.txtDo not give your key to the AI to read these files: they do not need it.
What next
The contract that is the source of all these texts is described in the OpenAPI contract. For an AI to act on your data with your key, read the MCP server.
