What is the Incline Dumbbell Curl?
The incline dumbbell curl is a biceps isolation exercise performed seated on a bench set to 45 degrees, with the arms hanging behind the torso. That position is the whole point: it pulls the long head of the biceps into a stretch before the rep even starts, so tension stays on the muscle from bottom to top instead of collapsing at the end of the movement. Because the bench fixes your back and shoulders, momentum is almost impossible, which is why the weight you use here will be lighter than on a standing curl. Alternating arms lets you keep each side under control and watch the supination through the full range. Expect a shorter range at the top than you are used to: the incline shortens the path, and chasing height there only brings the shoulders into it. It suits every level, from a lifter chasing arm size to someone learning what a clean curl actually feels like.
How to properly perform the Incline Dumbbell Curl
- Set an incline bench to 45 degrees.
- Hold a dumbbell in each hand and sit back against the bench.
- Let your arms hang straight down at your sides, palms facing forward.
- Keeping your upper arms still, exhale as you curl one dumbbell toward your shoulder, rotating your forearm so the palm faces your shoulder at the top.
- Inhale as you lower the dumbbell under control.
- Repeat on the other side, alternating arms each rep.
- Keep alternating for the recommended number of reps.
