What is the Resistance Band External Rotation?
The resistance band external rotation trains the infraspinatus and teres minor, two of the four rotator cuff muscles, and it is one of the few exercises that reaches them directly. Every pressing movement in a programme trains internal rotation; almost nothing trains the opposite direction, and that imbalance is behind a large share of shoulder problems in people who lift regularly. With the band anchored at waist height and the elbow held at a right angle against your side, rotating the forearm away from the body isolates the movement completely. The load should be genuinely light. These are small muscles working at the end of a lever, and using a band heavy enough to make the whole arm swing simply hands the job to the larger muscles you were trying to bypass. Keep the upper arm pinned throughout.
How to properly perform the Resistance Band External Rotation
- Attach a resistance band to a stable anchor point at waist height.
- Stand side-on to the anchor point and hold the band with one hand.
- Keep your elbow bent at a 90 degrees angle and your upper arm parallel to the floor.
- Rotate your forearm away from your body, keeping the upper arm still.
- Return to the starting position and repeat for the recommended number of repetitions.
- Switch sides and repeat the exercise with the other arm.
