What is the Seated Towel Calf Stretch?

The towel calf stretch is a seated stretch for the calf muscles: you sit with the legs straight, loop a towel around the ball of one foot and pull it toward you until the foot flexes and the back of the lower leg lengthens. Runners and cyclists reach for it most, since both sports drive the ankle through repeated flexion and extension and leave the gastrocnemius and soleus short. Walking and squatting normally take roughly 10 degrees of ankle dorsiflexion, and stiff calves are the usual reason that range disappears. The seated position is what makes the stretch work: the leg stays straight, so the pull lands on the muscle instead of being swallowed by a bent knee, and your hands set the intensity rather than your body weight. A resistance band does the same job as a towel. Nothing else is needed, which makes it easy after a run, at a desk, or on a hotel room floor.

How to properly perform the Seated Towel Calf Stretch

  1. Sit on the edge of a mat or another firm surface with your legs straight out in front of you.
  2. Loop a towel or a resistance band around the ball of one foot.
  3. Keeping the leg straight, pull the towel or band gently toward you, flexing your foot and stretching your calf muscles.
  4. Hold the stretch for a few seconds, feeling the tension in your calf.
  5. Release the stretch and repeat on the other side.
  6. Keep alternating legs for the recommended number of reps, keeping the pull gentle and the stretch felt in your calves.
