What is the Seated Neck Stretch?
The seated neck stretch is a mobility drill: sitting tall with your shoulders relaxed, you lengthen the muscles running along the back of the neck and the top of the upper back. It takes under a minute and needs nothing but a chair, which is why it fits so easily into a workday. Who is it for? Anyone who spends hours in front of a screen. Holding the head forward of the shoulders loads the neck extensors all day long, and that tension usually shows up as stiffness at the base of the skull by late afternoon. How long should you hold it? 15 to 30 seconds per rep, repeated two or three times, is enough to feel a change. Keep the pull broad and comfortable: any pinching, or tingling that travels into the arm, means you have gone too far.
How to properly perform the Seated Neck Stretch
- Sit on a chair or on the floor with your back straight.
- Keep your back straight and your shoulders relaxed.
- For a deeper stretch, you can use your hands to apply light pressure to your head.
- Hold the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds.
