What is the Spiderman Mountain Climber?
The spiderman mountain climber is a bodyweight conditioning drill that turns a standard mountain climber into a hip mobility exercise. Instead of driving the knee toward your chest, you step the foot forward beside the same-side hand, which opens the hip and loads the adductors and hip flexors through a much longer range. That single change is what makes the movement feel harder than it looks: your shoulders have to hold a high plank while one leg travels a long way, so the core resists rotation on every repetition. It costs nothing in equipment and scales through tempo rather than load. Slow repetitions make it a mobility drill you can use before squatting or sprinting; fast repetitions make it a metabolic finisher that raises your heart rate in under a minute. Keep the hips low and the spine long, and the exercise stays honest at either speed.
How to properly perform the Spiderman Mountain Climber
- Start in a high plank with your hands directly under your shoulders and your body in a straight line.
- Bring your right foot forward and plant it beside your right hand, flexing the hip and opening the hip joint.
- Return your right foot to the starting position, then repeat the movement with your left foot, alternating sides.
- Keep alternating sides, holding a controlled, stable plank position throughout the exercise.
- Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions.
