What is the Pec Stretch on a Stability Ball?

The pec stretch performed over a stability ball opens the chest and the front of the shoulders further than any standing version can, because the ball supports the spine while gravity does the work. Sitting on the ball and walking the feet forward until the upper back rests on it lets the arms fall out to the sides under their own weight, so the pectorals lengthen without you having to hold anything or push into the position. That passive quality is the point: the muscle releases far better under a sustained, unforced stretch than under pressure. It matters for anyone who spends hours at a desk or who trains pressing more often than pulling, since short pectorals pull the shoulders forward and change how the shoulder blade moves. Breathe steadily and let the chest open on each exhale.

How to properly perform the Pec Stretch on a Stability Ball

  1. Sit on a stability ball with your feet flat on the floor.
  2. Extend your arms out to the sides at shoulder height.
  3. Lean back gently, letting your chest open while keeping your arms extended.
  4. Hold the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds, breathing deeply.
  5. Return to the starting position and repeat as needed.
