What is the Doorway Chest Stretch?

The doorway chest stretch is the most practical way to lengthen the pectorals and the front of the shoulders, because the doorway does the work of holding your arms in place while you simply step forward. With the elbows bent and resting on the frame, moving your body forward puts the chest under a steady, controlled stretch that no free-standing position can match. It matters for anyone who spends hours at a desk or trains pressing movements more often than pulling ones, since short pectorals pull the shoulders forward and change how the shoulder blade moves on the rib cage. The mistake to avoid is arching the lower back to reach further, which relieves the chest and loads the spine instead. Keep the ribs down and the pull stays where it belongs, across the chest and the front of the shoulder.

How to properly perform the Doorway Chest Stretch

  1. Stand in a doorway with your arms out to the sides and your elbows bent at 90 degrees.
  2. Step forward until you feel a stretch across your chest and shoulders.
  3. Hold the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds.
  4. Repeat as needed.
