What is the Brachialis Pull Up?
The neutral grip pull up is performed with the palms facing each other on two parallel handles, and that orientation changes both the comfort and the muscular emphasis. A neutral position is the one the shoulder tolerates best, since it forces neither the internal rotation of a pronated grip nor the external rotation of a supinated one, which makes it the first choice for anyone who feels the other variations in the joint. As for the muscles, the brachialis and the brachioradialis contribute considerably more than in a classic pull up, while the lats still do the bulk of the work. It is usually the variation in which people manage the most repetitions, so it makes a sensible entry point. Lower until the arms are completely straight on every repetition rather than cutting the range short.
How to properly perform the Brachialis Pull Up
- Grip two parallel handles or a neutral grip bar, palms facing each other and shoulder-width apart.
- Hang with your arms straight, your shoulders engaged and your core braced, without arching your lower back.
- Pull by driving your elbows down and back, bringing your chest toward your hands.
- Rise until your chin passes the level of your hands, contracting the back and the brachialis.
- Lower slowly until your arms are completely straight.
- Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions.
