What is the Cable Crossover Upper Chest?

The low-to-high cable crossover targets the clavicular fibres of the pectoral, the upper chest, by moving the arms upward and inward along the line those fibres actually run. Setting both pulleys at the bottom and sweeping the hands up to cross in front of the chest matches the direction of pull far more closely than a flat press does, which is why the exercise appears so often in programmes aimed at filling out the top of the chest. The cable keeps tension constant through the whole arc, including at the point where the hands meet and a dumbbell would offer nothing. Keep a slight fixed bend in the elbows for the entire set, since straightening them strains the joint and bending them further turns the fly into a press. Use moderate loads, because a heavy crossover almost always turns into a press and the upper chest loses the isolation the exercise was chosen for.

How to properly perform the Cable Crossover Upper Chest

  1. Set both pulleys to their lowest position and take one handle in each hand, palms facing forward.
  2. Step forward to the centre of the pulleys with your torso leaning slightly and your elbows slightly bent.
  3. Sweep your arms forward and upward in an arc until your hands cross at chest height.
  4. Squeeze the upper chest, then return slowly to the starting position and repeat for the recommended number of repetitions.
