What is the Standing Band Chest Press?
The standing band chest press is a horizontal pressing exercise: a resistance band runs across the upper back, and both hands drive forward from a 90-degree elbow position until the arms lock out in front of the chest. It trains the pectorals, front delts and triceps the way a bench press does, but the resistance curve is reversed: the band gets hardest at full extension, exactly where a barbell feels easiest. That makes it a strong choice for building lockout strength and for anyone training at home or on the road without heavy equipment. Standing also forces the core and glutes to resist the band pulling the torso backward, so the movement carries over to pushing while on your feet. Two to three sets of 12 to 20 reps with a band that still has tension at the start position is a practical starting point.
How to properly perform the Standing Band Chest Press
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and set the band across your upper back, holding one end in each hand.
- Start with your elbows bent to 90 degrees, in a goalpost position.
- Press the band forward until your arms are fully extended, squeezing your chest muscles.
- Return slowly to the starting position, keeping tension on the band throughout the movement.
- Repeat for the desired number of reps.
