What is the Hang Snatch Below Knee?
The hang snatch starts with the bar hanging below the knees rather than resting on the floor, and that difference makes it the usual route into learning the snatch. By removing the first pull, which is the technically hardest part of the lift, you can concentrate on what actually produces the power: the explosive extension of hips, knees and ankles, and the speed with which you drop under the bar to receive it overhead. It is a power movement rather than a maximal strength one, so short sets with moderate loads and a fast bar are worth far more than heavy, slow repetitions. The back position at the start is not negotiable: chest up, shoulders back and a neutral spine before any acceleration begins. Learn the receiving position separately before adding speed, because catching a bar overhead in a squat is a skill in its own right and it does not improve simply by loading the bar more heavily.
How to properly perform the Hang Snatch Below Knee
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and the bar in front of your thighs.
- Bend your knees and hips to lower the bar to just below your knees.
- Keep your back flat, your chest up and your shoulders back.
- Extend your hips, knees and ankles rapidly, pulling the bar upward explosively.
- As the bar reaches chest height, drop quickly into a squat and turn your elbows under the bar to receive it overhead.
- Stand up with the bar overhead, extending your hips and knees fully.
- Lower the bar under control to the starting position.
- Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions.
