What is the Medicine Ball Plank?

The medicine ball plank is a core exercise in which you hold a plank position with both hands on a medicine ball instead of the floor, then jump the feet out to the sides and back to the center without letting the hips move. The unstable surface forces the deep abdominal muscles and the shoulder stabilizers to fire continuously just to keep the ball still. Why is it harder than a standard plank? Two reasons stack up. The ball removes the wide, solid base your hands normally get, and the jumping feet add a constant stream of small forces the trunk has to cancel out. Together they turn an isometric hold into an anti-rotation drill. Who is it for? Athletes who already hold a clean floor plank and want more from their core work. Quality beats duration: stop the set the moment the hips start to sag or hike.

How to properly perform the Medicine Ball Plank

  1. Start in a plank position with your hands on a medicine ball.
  2. Engage your core and keep your body in a straight line from head to heels.
  3. Jump your feet out to the sides, then bring them back to the center while holding the plank position.
  4. Repeat for the desired number of reps.
