What is the Neutral Grip Dumbbell Bench Press?

The neutral grip dumbbell bench press holds the dumbbells with the palms facing each other rather than forward, and that grip changes where the load falls. Neutral hands naturally keep the elbows tucked closer to the ribs, which reduces the stress on the front of the shoulder and shifts a larger share of the work onto the triceps and the inner chest. For anyone whose shoulders complain during a conventional bench press, it is often the variation that lets them keep pressing at all. Dumbbells add their own advantage over a bar: each arm works independently, so strength differences cannot hide, and the hands can travel lower at the bottom for a deeper stretch. Lower the weights toward the middle of the chest rather than the collarbone, and press without letting them clash at the top.

How to properly perform the Neutral Grip Dumbbell Bench Press

  1. Lie flat on a bench with a dumbbell in each hand.
  2. Position the dumbbells directly above your chest, palms facing inward.
  3. Keep your feet flat on the floor and your back against the bench.
  4. Bend your elbows and lower the dumbbells toward the middle of your chest.
  5. Pause briefly, then press the dumbbells back up to the starting position, extending your arms fully.
  6. Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions.
