What is the Banded Nordic Curl?

The banded nordic curl is an advanced hamstring exercise: you kneel, hinge forward from the knees with a flat back until the torso is close to parallel with the floor, and use an anchored resistance band to help you back up. The band is what makes the movement trainable, because the hamstrings work eccentrically on the way down and the elastic gives back just enough assistance to reverse the rep before the body collapses. Who is it for? Runners, sprinters and field-sport athletes. Eccentric hamstring work is one of the most studied strategies for cutting hamstring strain risk, and the nordic pattern is its flagship movement. Beginners rarely control a full unassisted rep, so band assistance turns an all-or-nothing exercise into something that can be loaded progressively: start with a thick band, then move to a lighter one as the descent gets slower and the return gets easier.

How to properly perform the Banded Nordic Curl

  1. Anchor a resistance band to a low point, such as a post or a wall.
  2. Kneel down, holding the resistance band with both hands.
  3. Lean forward, keeping your back flat, until your body is almost parallel to the floor.
  4. Use the band to help yourself back to the starting position.
  5. Repeat for the recommended number of reps.
