What is the Lunge Sled Push?
The sled push done from a lunge stance is a resistance exercise that trains the legs, glutes and core one side at a time. Instead of running the sled forward on both legs, you settle into a split position, grip the handles and drive the sled away from you through the front foot alone, extending that leg fully before resetting. The single-leg version exposes strength differences between sides that a two-legged push hides completely. Its real advantage is what it leaves out: a sled has almost no eccentric phase, so you generate large amounts of force with very little muscle damage. That makes it usable close to competition, during a return from injury, or simply on weeks when heavy squatting would cost you too much recovery. Load the sled so the drive stays explosive rather than grinding.
How to properly perform the Lunge Sled Push
- Set up a sled loaded with weight plates.
- Stand in front of the sled and grip the handles with both hands.
- Step back into a lunge position, with one foot forward and the other foot sliding back behind you.
- Drive through the front foot and extend that leg, pushing the sled away from you.
- Keep pushing the sled using the strength of your legs, holding a stable, braced midsection.
- Perform the desired number of repetitions on one side, then switch legs and repeat.
