What is the Reverse Grip Push Up?
The reverse grip push up turns the hands so the fingers point back toward your feet, which changes the mechanics of a familiar movement completely. The elbows are forced to stay close to the body and travel backward rather than flaring out, so the lower portion of the chest and, unusually for a pressing movement, the biceps take a share of the work. Performing it on an incline is the sensible way in, because the reversed grip places real demand on wrist extension and shoulder rotation, and raising the hands reduces both the load and the angle. Nobody should attempt this flat on the floor before the wrists tolerate the position on a bench. Warm the wrists first, keep the body in one line from head to heels, and add range before you add difficulty.
How to properly perform the Reverse Grip Push Up
- Set an incline bench to a moderate angle, around 45 degrees.
- Place your hands on the bench with a reverse grip, palms turned toward your feet.
- Position your body in a straight line from head to heels, bracing your abs and glutes.
- Bend your elbows and lower your chest toward the bench while keeping your body in a straight line.
- Push through your hands to straighten your arms and return to the starting position.
- Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions, keeping good form and working the chest and triceps.
