What is the Neutral Grip Single Arm Dumbbell Shoulder Press?

The single arm dumbbell shoulder press performed with a neutral grip starts with the palm facing inward rather than forward, which places the shoulder in a slightly more natural plane and reduces the demand on external rotation at the bottom of the movement. For anyone who finds a conventional overhead press uncomfortable, that small change often makes the difference between pressing and not pressing. Working one side at a time adds an anti-lateral-flexion demand, since the off-centre load pulls the torso toward the working side and the obliques on the opposite side have to prevent it. Sitting with the back supported removes the legs from the equation entirely. Keep the ribs down as the weight gets heavy, and finish the repetition with the arm stacked over the ear rather than drifting in front of the body.

How to properly perform the Neutral Grip Single Arm Dumbbell Shoulder Press

  1. Take a dumbbell with a neutral grip, palm facing inward, and sit on a bench with back support.
  2. Position the dumbbell at shoulder height, with your elbow bent.
  3. Press the dumbbell overhead by extending your arm and straightening your elbow.
  4. Pause at the top, then lower the dumbbell slowly to the starting position.
  5. Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions, then switch sides.
