What is the Bodyweight Shrug?
The bodyweight shrug trains the upper trapezius by lifting the shoulders toward the ears, and without any external load it serves two distinct purposes. The first is instructional: it lets you learn the range and feel where the shoulder blade actually stops elevating before you pick up dumbbells, which prevents the most common fault of all, shortening the range as soon as the weight climbs. The second is mobility, because repeating the movement with a relaxed neck mobilises an area that hours at a screen keep tense without ever training. The trapezius elevates the shoulder blade, it does not rotate it, so rolling the shoulders backward at the top adds nothing and places the joint in a position it cannot control. Lift slowly, hold for a moment at the top, and lower all the way down.
How to properly perform the Bodyweight Shrug
- Stand tall with your back straight and your feet shoulder-width apart.
- Lift your shoulders toward your ears, squeezing the traps at the top.
- Lower your shoulders back to the starting position.
- Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions.
