What is the Resistance Band Shoulder Press?
The resistance band shoulder press works the deltoids and triceps against elastic resistance, and the resistance curve is the opposite of a dumbbell's. A band stretches further as your arms extend, so it is hardest at the very top of the movement, exactly where a free weight becomes easiest because the load sits over the joint. That makes it a useful complement to dumbbell pressing rather than a poor imitation of it, and it makes overhead pressing available anywhere with a single piece of equipment. Standing on the band sets the anchor, and how much slack you take up before the first repetition decides the tension. Keep the abs braced and the ribs down, since the easiest way to fake range on any overhead press is to arch the lower back. Choose a band that lets you lock out cleanly on the last repetition of the set rather than one that stops you halfway, and add tension by widening your stance.
How to properly perform the Resistance Band Shoulder Press
- Stand on a resistance band with your feet shoulder-width apart.
- Hold the ends of the band with your palms facing forward and bring your hands to shoulder height.
- Keep your abs braced and your back straight.
- Press the band upward, extending your arms fully without locking the elbows.
- Lower the band back to shoulder height and repeat for the recommended number of repetitions.
