What is the Palms-Up Forearm Stretch?

The palms-up forearm stretch targets the wrist flexors, the muscles on the underside of the forearm that shorten under every hour of typing and every heavy set of deadlifts. With the arm extended in front of you and the palm facing up, you use the other hand to draw the fingers gently back, which lengthens the flexors from the wrist all the way to the inside of the elbow. It takes fifteen seconds and needs nothing at all, which is why it belongs between sets of pulling work as much as at a desk. Two things make the difference: keep the elbow straight, because bending it releases the tension you are trying to create, and pull only to the point of a firm stretch. The forearm responds to frequency far better than to force.

How to properly perform the Palms-Up Forearm Stretch

  1. Extend your arm in front of you with the palm facing up.
  2. With your other hand, gently pull back on your fingers to stretch the forearm.
  3. Hold the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds.
  4. Switch arms and repeat.
