What is the Impossible Dips?
Impossible dips are an advanced calisthenics push exercise performed between two parallel bars set at waist or chest height, lowering and pressing the body while the legs stay extended forward. The movement loads the triceps, shoulders and chest together, which is why calisthenics athletes treat it as a strength builder rather than a warm-up drill. What makes it harder than a standard dip? Position. Holding the legs out in front shifts the torso and forces the shoulders and triceps to control a far longer lever, so the six-step sequence has to be owned slowly instead of bounced. Anyone who cannot yet complete a strict parallel-bar dip through full range should build that base first. Who should train it? Intermediate and advanced athletes chasing pressing strength for straight-bar dips, ring work and handstand push-ups. Progress by slowing the descent before adding reps, and stop the set the moment the torso stops staying upright.
How to properly perform the Impossible Dips
- Set up between two parallel bars, or any support that lets you hang your body between two points at waist or chest height.
- Place your hands on the bars and press up so your body hangs vertically between them.
- Keep your legs straight out in front, or angled slightly down depending on your strength level.
- Lower your body slowly by bending the elbows, holding a tall, controlled posture throughout.
- Press back up by contracting the triceps and shoulders until you return to the starting position.
- Repeat, keeping the movement smooth and controlled.
