What is the Narrow Grip Stability Ball Push Up?

The stability ball push up is a chest and triceps press performed with both hands on an exercise ball instead of the floor. The ball rolls under any wobble, so the shoulders, wrists, and deep core muscles fire constantly just to hold the torso in one straight line from head to heels. A narrow hand position keeps the elbows tucked near the ribs, which shifts more of the work onto the triceps and the inner chest. How hard is it? Harder than it looks: lifters who press comfortably on the floor often drop to sets of 8 to 12 reps once the surface moves. Because the hands sit above the feet, the incline angle also takes some load off the shoulders compared with a floor push-up. Train it mid-workout, when the core is fresh enough to keep the hips from sagging and the ball from drifting.

How to properly perform the Narrow Grip Stability Ball Push Up

  1. Start in a push-up position with your hands on an exercise ball, keeping your body straight from head to heels.
  2. Lower your body toward the floor by bending your elbows, keeping them close to your sides.
  3. Press back up to the starting position, driving through your chest and triceps.
  4. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
