What is the Stability Ball Rollout?

The stability ball rollout trains the abdominals in the way they actually work: by resisting extension rather than producing flexion. Kneeling with your forearms or hands on the ball, you roll it forward and the load on your midsection grows with every centimetre, because the further the ball travels the longer the lever between your knees and your shoulders becomes. The abdominals fight to stop the lower back arching, and that is the entire exercise. It is a gentler entry point than an ab wheel, since the ball rolls more slowly and you can stop the movement at any distance. Roll only as far as you can go while keeping the hips from sagging. The moment the lower back arches, the abdominals have handed the job to the spine and the repetition has stopped counting.

How to properly perform the Stability Ball Rollout

  1. Start in a kneeling position with your hands on a stability ball.
  2. Brace your core and slowly roll the ball forward, extending your arms and keeping your body in a straight line.
  3. Roll the ball as far as you can while staying in control.
  4. Pause for a moment at the end of the movement.
  5. Roll the ball back toward your knees to return to the starting position.
  6. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
