What is the Incline Treadmill Walk?
Walking on an inclined treadmill is one of the most efficient forms of low-impact conditioning available in a gym. Raising the gradient increases the work your glutes, hamstrings and calves have to do on every step, so your heart rate climbs into a useful zone at a walking pace, without any of the ground impact that running produces. That combination makes it a sensible choice for building an aerobic base, for managing bodyweight alongside strength training, and for anyone whose knees or ankles do not tolerate running. The one habit that undoes all of it is holding the handrails. Leaning on them transfers a large share of your bodyweight to your arms and quietly removes most of the effort the incline was meant to create. Walk tall, let the arms swing, and pick a gradient you can hold with a normal stride.
How to properly perform the Incline Treadmill Walk
- Set the treadmill to an incline that challenges you while still allowing good form.
- Step onto the treadmill and start walking at a comfortable pace.
- Brace your abs and hold an upright posture throughout the exercise.
- Focus on driving through your legs and keep a steady stride as you walk uphill.
- Keep walking for the desired duration or distance.
- Gradually reduce the incline and the speed of the treadmill during the cool-down phase.
