What is the Barbell Clean and Press?
The barbell clean and press takes a bar from the floor to overhead in two distinct phases, and few exercises ask so much of the whole body in a single repetition. The clean is explosive: the legs and hips extend hard to accelerate the bar upward, and you drop under it to catch it at the shoulders in the rack position. The press is strength: from that rack, the shoulders and triceps drive the bar to full extension overhead while the core keeps the torso rigid. Training them together builds power, coordination and the ability to transfer force from the ground through the trunk to the arms, which is why the movement has stayed in athletic programmes for a century. Learn the two halves separately before combining them, and keep the loads moderate until the sequence feels automatic.
How to properly perform the Barbell Clean and Press
- Start standing with your feet shoulder-width apart and a barbell on the floor in front of you.
- Bend your knees and lower into a squat position, gripping the bar with an overhand grip.
- Drive through your legs and hips to extend explosively and pull the bar to your shoulders, catching it in the rack position.
- From the rack position, press the bar overhead by extending your arms and driving it upward.
- Lower the bar back to the rack position, then return it to the starting position on the floor.
- Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
