What is the Dead Hang Stretch?

The dead hang stretch is a simple yet effective exercise that helps improve upper body flexibility and relaxation, mainly targeting the shoulders and back. This passive movement promotes spinal decompression and can aid in relieving accumulated tension.

How to properly perform the Dead Hang Stretch

  1. Find a pull-up bar or a sturdy overhead structure that can support your body weight.
  2. Stand underneath the bar and reach up to grab it with an overhand grip, hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  3. Allow your body to hang freely from the bar, keeping your arms fully extended.
  4. Relax your shoulders and let your body weight provide a gentle stretch through your upper body, particularly your shoulders, upper back, and lats.
  5. Hold the position for a designated time, allowing your muscles to relax and elongate.
  6. After the desired duration, release your grip and carefully lower yourself down.
