What is the Reverse Push Up?
The reverse push up is performed face up rather than face down, with the hands on the floor behind you and the heels raised on a bench. Pressing the hips upward until the body forms a straight line loads the triceps hard, and the shoulders and the posterior chain work continuously to hold the position, which makes it a genuinely useful counterpart to a conventional push up rather than a novelty. Raising the feet is what makes it demanding: the higher the heels, the more of your bodyweight the arms carry. The hand position deserves attention, because pointing the fingers toward your feet keeps the shoulder in a position it can control. If you feel pinching at the front of the shoulder, turn the hands out slightly and reduce the depth rather than pushing through it.
How to properly perform the Reverse Push Up
- Sit on the floor with your hands placed behind you at shoulder width, fingers pointing toward your feet.
- Rest your heels on a bench or box with your legs straight.
- Press through your hands to lift your hips until your body forms a straight line from shoulders to heels.
- Bend your elbows to lower your hips until your arms reach a 90 degrees angle.
- Press back up to the starting position.
- Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions.
