What is the Incline Pushups?

Incline pushups are performed with the hands raised on a bench, a step or a bar, and they are the most useful regression of the push up because they scale continuously. The higher the surface, the less bodyweight your arms carry, which means you can find the exact height at which you complete clean repetitions today and lower it as you get stronger. Unlike a knee push up, the body stays in one straight line from head to heels, so the core keeps doing its job and the movement pattern you practise is the one you are working toward. The chest, triceps and front deltoids do the same work as in a full push up, simply at a reduced share of your weight. Make sure the surface is solid and will not slide, and keep the hands under the chest rather than under the shoulders.

How to properly perform the Incline Pushups

  1. Face a solid raised surface such as a bench or a step.
  2. Place your hands shoulder-width apart on the surface and extend your legs behind you, resting on your toes.
  3. Keep your body straight from head to heels, bracing your abs and glutes.
  4. Bend your elbows and lower your chest toward the surface in a controlled, stable movement.
  5. Push through your palms and straighten your arms, returning to the starting position.
  6. Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions.
