What is the Single Arm Incline Dumbbell Press?
The single arm incline dumbbell press is a unilateral chest exercise performed lying on a bench set to roughly 45 degrees, pressing one dumbbell from chest level to full arm extension. Working one side at a time exposes the strength gap between your arms, and the weaker side can no longer hide behind the stronger one the way it does with a barbell. What does it target? Mainly the upper pectorals, with the front delts and triceps assisting. The single-sided load also turns the movement into core work, since the obliques have to resist the rotation that a weight on one side creates. How should you use it? Program it after your main press, run the weaker arm first, and match the stronger arm to whatever the weaker one completed. Keep the tempo slow on the way down and pause briefly at the top of every rep.
How to properly perform the Single Arm Incline Dumbbell Press
- Set an incline bench to a moderate angle (about 45 degrees).
- Hold a dumbbell in one hand and lie back on the bench, positioning the dumbbell at chest level.
- With your upper arm parallel to the floor, press the dumbbell up until your arm is fully extended.
- Pause at the top, then lower the dumbbell slowly back to the starting position.
- Complete the recommended number of reps with one arm, then switch to the other arm and repeat.
- Focus on staying stable and controlled throughout, squeezing your chest muscles.
