What is the Single Leg Glute Bridge?

The single leg glute bridge is a bodyweight hip extension performed on one leg, and it is the quickest way to find out which side of your hips is doing less work. Lying on your back with one knee bent and the other leg extended, you drive through the heel of the working leg and lift the hips until the body forms a straight line from shoulder to knee. Because one glute carries the whole load, the weaker side gives itself away immediately — the hips drop or twist toward the extended leg. That feedback is the point. It needs no equipment, fits before a lower body session as activation or after it as accessory work, and suits every level. Keep the ribs down and the abs braced so the movement comes from the hips, not from arching the lower back.

How to properly perform the Single Leg Glute Bridge

  1. Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.
  2. Extend one leg straight out in front of you.
  3. Squeeze your glutes and lift your hips off the floor, pressing through the heel of the bent leg.
  4. Keep your abs braced and hold a straight line from your knee to your shoulder.
  5. Lower your hips back to the starting position.
  6. Repeat for the recommended number of reps, then switch legs.
