What is the Elevated Standing Hamstring Stretch?

The standing hamstring stretch with the heel raised on an elevated surface is one of the simplest ways to lengthen the back of the thigh without lying on the floor. You place one heel on a bench, a step or a low box, keep a soft bend in that knee, and hinge forward from the hips rather than rounding the spine. That distinction is what separates a real hamstring stretch from a lower-back stretch: if your back rounds, the pull you feel moves away from the muscle you meant to target. Keeping a slight bend in the extended leg protects the sciatic nerve and keeps the tension in the muscle belly. Use it after training, when the tissue is warm and responds best to a held stretch, or between sets of hip-dominant work to restore range.

How to properly perform the Elevated Standing Hamstring Stretch

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and extend one leg straight in front of you, resting the heel on an elevated surface.
  2. Bend the other knee and place your hands on your hips.
  3. Keep your back straight and brace your abs.
  4. Hinge forward from the hips while keeping a slight bend in the extended leg.
  5. Feel the stretch in the hamstrings of the extended leg.
  6. Hold the stretch for 20 to 30 seconds, breathing deeply.
  7. Repeat on the other side.
