What is the Standing EZ Bar Overhead Tricep Extension?
The EZ bar overhead tricep extension is an isolation exercise where you stand holding an EZ bar with a narrow grip, press it overhead, and lower it behind your head before extending back up. The angled handles let the wrists sit in a semi-neutral position, which is why many lifters who feel pinching with a straight bar can still train the movement pain-free. Standing means the core has to resist the arch that the overhead load creates, so bracing matters as much as elbow position. Three sets of 10 to 12 reps with a light EZ bar is a sensible starting point, since this is a stretch-loaded movement and the elbows respond better to volume than to maximal weight. Keep the upper arms close to the head, let the elbows drift only slightly outward at the bottom, and drive back up by squeezing the triceps rather than shrugging the shoulders.
How to properly perform the Standing EZ Bar Overhead Tricep Extension
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold an EZ bar with a narrow grip, palms facing forward.
- Press the bar overhead, keeping your upper arms close to your head.
- Lower the bar behind your head by bending your elbows, letting them open slightly out to the sides.
- Extend your arms and drive the bar back to the starting position, focusing on squeezing your triceps.
- Repeat for the recommended number of reps.
