What is the Single Arm Tricep Pushdown Machine?

The single arm tricep pushdown on a machine with an arm pad removes the one variable that ruins most triceps work: the upper arm moving. With the arm resting on the pad and the elbow set at a right angle, the shoulder is locked out of the movement entirely, so extending the arm can only be done by the triceps. That constraint is what the machine sells, and it makes the exercise unusually easy to perform well even when you are tired at the end of a session. Working one arm at a time doubles the time the exercise takes and returns two things for it: you can see and correct the strength difference between sides, and you can give the working arm full attention through a controlled lowering phase, which is where the triceps takes most of its stimulus.

How to properly perform the Single Arm Tricep Pushdown Machine

  1. Adjust the seat height and position yourself correctly on the machine.
  2. Grip the handle with one hand, palm facing down.
  3. Position your upper arm parallel to the floor with your elbow at a 90 degrees angle.
  4. Keep your upper arm still and exhale as you press the handle down, extending your arm fully.
  5. Inhale as you raise the handle slowly back to the starting position under control.
  6. Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions, then switch sides.
