What is the Standing Wrist Rotation Exercise?
The wrist rotation exercise is a warm-up drill that takes the wrist joint through its full turning range while holding a light weight, so the forearm is ready before heavier pressing or pulling begins. With the elbow fixed at 90 degrees, only the wrist moves, which is exactly what makes it useful: the small muscles of the forearm get blood and warmth without any load reaching the shoulder. When should you do it? Right before any session that loads the wrists, such as bench pressing, front squats, cleans or a heavy day of curls, and again between sets if the joint feels stiff. A light weight is plenty, since the point is circulation and joint prep, not fatigue, so stop well before the forearm burns. Rushing this is a common mistake in the gym: the wrist takes compressive load in almost every upper-body lift, yet it gets a fraction of the warm-up time the shoulders receive.
How to properly perform the Standing Wrist Rotation Exercise
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a weight in one hand.
- With your elbow bent to 90 degrees, rotate your wrist to lift the weight upward.
- Lower the weight back to the starting position.
- Repeat for the recommended number of reps.
