What is the Dumbbell Single Arm Shrug?

The dumbbell single arm shrugs are an excellent exercise to build strength and size in the trapezius muscles. Working one side at a time can help correct muscle imbalances and improve focus on muscle contraction.

How to properly perform the Dumbbell Single Arm Shrug

  1. Stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in one hand.
  2. Keep your back straight and engage your core.
  3. Slowly shrug the shoulder on the side of the dumbbell as high as possible.
  4. Hold the contraction at the top of the movement.
  5. Lower the shoulder slowly back to the starting position.
  6. Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions, then switch sides.
