What is the Smith Machine Reverse Lunge?

The Smith machine reverse lunge takes a movement that normally demands significant balance and removes that demand, because the bar travels on a fixed vertical path. What remains is the strength work: the quadriceps and glutes of the front leg do the job of lowering and raising the body, and you can concentrate on depth and knee position rather than on staying upright. That makes it a good choice for training a single leg heavily, for beginners learning the pattern, and for anyone whose balance is the limiting factor before their legs are. The trade-off is worth stating plainly. The stabilising muscles of the hip and ankle work far less here than in a free-weight lunge, so the Smith version complements dumbbell work rather than replacing it. Step back far enough that the front shin stays vertical.

How to properly perform the Smith Machine Reverse Lunge

  1. Stand facing the Smith machine with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Place the bar on your shoulders behind your neck, gripping it with an overhand grip.
  3. Step back with one foot and lower your body into a lunge, bending both knees to about 90 degrees.
  4. Keep your front knee directly over your ankle and your back knee just above the floor.
  5. Push through your front heel to return to the starting position.
  6. Switch legs and repeat the movement.
  7. Keep alternating legs for the recommended number of repetitions.
