What is the Alternating Jump Lunge?

The alternating jump lunge is a plyometric exercise in which you drop into a lunge, jump straight up, and swap legs in midair before landing in the opposite lunge. It builds explosive power in the quads, glutes, and calves while pushing the heart rate high, which is why it shows up so often in HIIT circuits and athletic conditioning blocks. The switch happens at the top of the jump, so every repetition trains both the concentric drive and the ability to absorb landing force. Coaches typically program it for thirty to forty-five seconds of work, or eight to ten repetitions per leg, before a full recovery. Is it suitable for beginners? Not as a first lunge variation: the landing loads the knees and hips hard, so build a clean bodyweight reverse lunge first, then add the jump once depth and balance are consistent.

How to properly perform the Alternating Jump Lunge

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart.
  2. Step forward with your right foot and lower your body into a lunge, bending both knees to about 90 degrees.
  3. Push through your right heel and jump explosively, switching legs in midair.
  4. Land softly with your left foot forward and your right foot back, immediately lowering into another lunge.
  5. Keep alternating explosive lunges, switching legs on every jump.
  6. Perform the exercise with a smooth, controlled motion, holding good form throughout.
  7. Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions or duration.
