What is the Dumbbell Front Squat?
The dumbbell front squat is a lower-body strength exercise performed with a dumbbell resting at each shoulder, palms facing inward. Holding the load in front rather than across your back shifts the demand: your torso has to stay upright, so the quadriceps take more of the work and the upper back and core work hard just to keep the chest from folding forward. For most lifters it is an easier movement to learn than the barbell front squat, because the dumbbells do not require any wrist or elbow flexibility to rack. It is also self-limiting in the best way: when your posture breaks down, the dumbbells drift forward and you feel it immediately. Use it as a main lower-body movement when you train at home or without a rack, or as an accessory to build quad strength and an upright squatting posture alongside heavier barbell work.
How to properly perform the Dumbbell Front Squat
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, palms facing inward.
- Brace your abs and keep your chest lifted as you lower into a squat, pushing your hips back and bending your knees.
- Descend as low as you comfortably can, keeping your heels on the floor and your knees tracking over your toes.
- Drive through your heels to return to the starting position, extending your hips and knees.
- Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions.
