What is the Pulse Squat?
The pulse squat is a bodyweight variation in which you hold the bottom of a squat and perform small, repeated bounces instead of standing back up between repetitions. Staying low is the entire mechanism: the quadriceps and glutes never get the brief unloading that the top of a normal squat provides, so blood flow is restricted and metabolic stress builds fast. That makes it a useful way to fatigue the legs without any equipment, which is why it appears so often in home workouts and in circuit finishers. The common mistake is letting the pulses grow into full repetitions, which reintroduces the rest you were trying to remove. Keep the range small, the chest up and the weight through the heels, and a set that looks trivial on paper becomes genuinely demanding within twenty seconds.
How to properly perform the Pulse Squat
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
- Lower into a squat position, keeping your back straight and your knees tracking over your toes.
- Once at the bottom, perform small pulses while holding the squat position, squeezing the thighs and glutes.
- Keep your weight on your heels, then after several pulses rise slowly back to the starting position.
