What is the Single-Leg Medicine Ball Wood Chop?

A medicine ball wood chop is a rotational core exercise that takes the ball on a diagonal path, from low beside one hip up to overhead on the opposite side, driven by the trunk rather than the arms. The single-leg version adds a balance demand: standing on one foot forces the hip stabilizers and the deep core to fight the rotation while the obliques produce it. That combination makes it a favorite finisher for rotational athletes, from tennis players to golfers, who need power that transfers across the body instead of straight up and down. Because balance limits the load, a light ball moved with control beats a heavy one swung with momentum; most lifters do best with 8 to 12 controlled reps per leg. Keep the chest tall, let the ribs travel with the ball, and switch legs so both sides get the same work.

How to properly perform the Single-Leg Medicine Ball Wood Chop

  1. Stand on one leg, holding a medicine ball with both hands.
  2. Rotate your torso and lower the ball toward the floor on the side of the leg you are holding off the ground.
  3. Rotate back through the torso and drive the ball up and overhead.
  4. Repeat for the recommended number of reps, then switch legs.
