What is the Hindu Push Up?
The hindu push up moves through an arc rather than up and down, and that is what separates it from every other push up. Starting in an inverted V with the hips high, you dive the chest forward and low between the hands, then press up into an extended position with the hips near the floor and the chest lifted, before reversing the path back to the start. One repetition therefore trains the shoulders and triceps in a pressing pattern while taking the spine, hips and shoulders through a large range of motion. It comes from Indian wrestling conditioning and it works as both strength work and mobility work, which is why it appears so often in warm-ups. Keep the movement continuous and smooth rather than breaking it into stages, and stop well short of forcing the lower back into extension.
How to properly perform the Hindu Push Up
- Start in an inverted V with your hands and feet on the floor wider than shoulder-width and your hips high.
- Bend your elbows and sweep your chest forward, passing it low between your hands.
- Press through your arms as you lift your chest and let your hips lower toward the floor, looking up.
- Drive your hips back up to return to the inverted V, reversing the same path.
- Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions.
