What is the Single Leg Dumbbell Deadlift?
The single leg dumbbell deadlift is a hip hinge performed on one leg, with the free leg extending behind you as a counterweight. It trains the hamstrings and glutes of the standing leg through a long range while demanding balance and control from the hip and ankle, which is why coaches use it as much for stability as for strength. The load required is small compared with a two-legged deadlift, so it fits easily into home training and into rehabilitation, and it exposes side-to-side differences that a barbell hides. The hinge is the part to get right: the movement comes from pushing the hips backward, not from bending forward at the waist, and the back stays flat throughout. Watch for the hip of the free leg opening toward the ceiling. When it rotates, the hamstring stops working and the lower back takes over.
How to properly perform the Single Leg Dumbbell Deadlift
- Stand with your feet hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in one hand with the palm facing your body.
- Lift one leg off the floor, keeping a slight bend at the knee for balance.
- Hinge forward at the hips, lowering the dumbbell toward the floor while extending your free leg straight behind you for balance.
- Keep your back flat and your abs braced as you lower the dumbbell until you feel a stretch in the hamstrings.
- Pause, then return to the starting position by squeezing your glutes and using your hamstrings to bring your body upright.
- Repeat for the desired number of repetitions, then switch legs.
