What is the Smith Machine Good Morning?
The good morning trains the hamstrings, glutes and spinal erectors through a pure hip hinge, and performing it in a Smith machine removes the balance problem that makes the free-barbell version intimidating. With the bar travelling on a fixed vertical path, you can concentrate on pushing the hips back and keeping the spine flat rather than on stopping the bar drifting forward. That makes it a reasonable way to learn the pattern, and a practical way to train it when no spotter is available. The trade-off is that the fixed path does not follow the natural arc of a hinge, so the machine suits moderate loads and higher repetitions better than maximal work. Descend only as far as you can go with a flat back, and treat the moment the spine starts to round as the end of your range.
How to properly perform the Smith Machine Good Morning
- Place a bar on your back, just below your shoulders, standing with your feet shoulder-width apart.
- Bend your knees slightly and hinge forward from the hips, keeping your back flat.
- Lower until your torso is almost parallel to the floor.
- Come back up by driving through your hips and straightening your torso.
- Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions.
