What is the Smith Shrug Back?

The Smith machine narrow grip shrugs are an effective isolation exercise targeting the trapezius muscles, enhancing upper back strength and stability with the Smith machine. Perfect for isolating the traps with focused tension, it suits both beginners and advanced athletes by minimizing weight sway and maximizing muscle contraction.

How to properly perform the Smith Shrug Back

  1. Set a Smith bar at waist height.
  2. Position yourself under the bar, placing your shoulders under it.
  3. Grab the bar with a grip slightly wider than shoulder-width.
  4. Keeping your arms straight, lift the bar by contracting your traps.
  5. Hold the contraction at the top of the movement, then lower slowly.
  6. Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions.
