What is the One Arm Landmine Shoulder Press?

The one arm landmine shoulder press drives the end of a barbell fixed in an anchor along a diagonal path, upward and across the body. That diagonal is its main advantage: the shoulder never has to reach a fully vertical position, so anyone without the mobility for a strict overhead press can still train overhead pressing without forcing the joint. The deltoids and triceps do the primary work, but the off-centre load also requires the core and obliques to stop the torso rotating, so the exercise trains anti-rotation stability at the same time. Keep the feet planted and the ribs down, and avoid turning the hips to follow the movement: the arm crosses the body, the body does not follow the arm. The bar is also easier to set up than a rack: one end sits in the anchor and the other is loaded with plates, which makes the exercise available in almost any gym.

How to properly perform the One Arm Landmine Shoulder Press

  1. Set a landmine attachment in a secure position.
  2. Stand perpendicular to the attachment with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  3. Hold the end of the bar with one hand, palm facing down.
  4. Keep your back flat and your abs braced, extend the arm fully and press the bar up and across your body on a diagonal path.
  5. Pause at the top, then lower the bar slowly to the starting position.
  6. Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions, then switch sides.
