What is the JM Press?
The JM press is a barbell triceps exercise that lives halfway between a close grip bench press and a skull crusher. Lying on a flat bench with a narrow grip, you lower the bar toward your chin rather than your chest, keeping the elbows tucked close to the body, then press it back to lock out. That bar path is what makes it work: the elbows travel forward as they bend, so the triceps stay loaded through a range where a normal bench press would hand the work to the chest and shoulders. It is a favourite of powerlifters because it builds lockout strength with a load the elbows tolerate better than a skull crusher does. Start lighter than your close grip bench — the leverage is genuinely harder — and keep the descent slow enough that the bar never drifts away from you.
How to properly perform the JM Press
- Lie on a flat bench with your feet flat on the floor.
- Grip the bar with a narrow grip, palms facing away from you.
- Position the bar above your chest with your arms extended.
- Bend your elbows and lower the bar toward your chin, keeping your elbows close to your body.
- Pause briefly, then extend your arms to press the bar back to the starting position.
- Repeat for the recommended number of reps.
