What is the Humble Warrior Pose?

Humble warrior, or Baddha Virabhadrasana, takes the leg position of a warrior stance and adds a forward fold with the hands clasped behind the back. The combination asks for two things at once: the front leg holds a deep lunge while the quadriceps works isometrically, and the bound arms draw the shoulders into extension as the torso folds inside the front thigh. That shoulder position is what most people find limiting, and it is worth respecting rather than forcing. If the hands will not meet behind the back, holding a strap between them preserves the shape without straining the shoulder joint. Set the feet before anything else, since the whole posture depends on the back foot angle and the front knee tracking over the ankle rather than collapsing inward. Stay for several slow breaths rather than treating it as a quick shape, since the shoulders release with time and not with force.

How to properly perform the Humble Warrior Pose

  1. Stand with your feet hip-width apart, beginning in Tadasana, the mountain pose.
  2. Step your left leg about 1.5 metres behind you and turn the back foot to a 45 degrees angle.
  3. Bend the right leg to 90 degrees and line the knee up over the ankle.
  4. Raise your arms overhead, then clasp your hands behind your back.
  5. Fold gently forward, bringing your torso inside your right thigh, and stay in the position for 10 breaths.
