What is the Backward Running?

Backward running reverses the mechanics of a normal stride, and the differences are more substantial than they appear. Pushing off with the forefoot rather than rolling through the heel shifts the work toward the quadriceps and the calves, while the hamstrings do far less than they would running forward. Because you cannot see where you are going, the exercise also demands proprioception and balance in a way that ordinary running never asks for, which is why it appears in agility work and in rehabilitation programmes for the knee. It is gentler on the knee joint than forward running at the same effort, a property that has kept it in physiotherapy for decades. Use a clear, flat, familiar surface, keep the torso upright, and cover short distances rather than long ones. Start on grass or a track rather than a road, and glance over your shoulder every few steps until the pattern feels automatic and your footing is reliable.

How to properly perform the Backward Running

  1. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart on a clear, flat surface.
  2. Begin running backward, keeping your torso upright and using your arms to drive the movement.
  3. Push off through the forefoot on each step and stay balanced.
  4. Cover the planned distance, then walk back forward to recover.
  5. Repeat for the recommended number of sets.
