What is the Resistance Band Deadlift?

The resistance band deadlift trains the hip hinge with the band anchored under your feet, and its resistance profile is the opposite of a barbell's. A bar is hardest to break off the floor and easiest at lockout; a band offers little at the bottom and reaches peak tension when you are standing tall, exactly where the glutes finish the movement. That makes it a genuinely useful complement rather than a poor substitute, and it makes the pattern trainable at home with no load on the spine at the bottom of the range. Everything else about the hinge is unchanged. Push the hips back rather than squatting down, keep the back flat, and keep your weight in the heels. Set the starting tension by how far apart you stand on the band, and choose a band that lets you lock out without leaning backward.

How to properly perform the Resistance Band Deadlift

  1. Start by standing with your feet hip-width apart, making sure the band is securely anchored under your feet.
  2. Hold the band handles with your palms facing your body and your arms straight in front of you.
  3. Brace your abs, keep your back flat, then hinge at the hips and bend the knees slightly as you lower the handles toward the floor.
  4. Keep your weight in your heels and maintain tension in the band throughout the movement.
  5. Drive through your heels, straighten your legs and return to the starting position.
  6. Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions.
